Milton Vineyard 'Libiamo' Gewurztraminer Gisborne, N.Z.  $60.

'Orange, hazy colour. So pungent, so fragrant, loaded with sweet fruit, green herbs, ripe apple, mandarin, honeysuckle. Slippery then bone dry in texture, a really exotic, chewy orange wine of intensity, freshness, tangerine tang, wild edges and charisma. Complex, fascinating, delicious.'

Pheasants Tears Kisi '15. Kakheti, Georgia.  $56.

"Georgian orange wine from the Kisi grape. Fermented in clay pots lined with beeswax. The color is orange to deep amber. The nose is like no other; sour cream and chives, basil, oregano, dried oranges, and marzipan. Tastes like a wine for one second, then an overwhelming yeasty flavor kicks in. Grainy and oxidized, but with a beer aftertaste. My best comparison would be wheat flavored Sherry."

Pheasants Tears Rkatsiteli '16. Kakheti, Georgia.  $52.

Defined as an ‘orange wine’, this kind of wine is typically made from white grapes and is left on the skins for an extended period, soaking up a golden amber colour, deep flavour and tannins that help preserve it. This one is made from a grape called Rkatsiteli, an ancient variety seldom seen, so this represents a rare opportunity. You’ll find it to be deeply perfumed with a monumental finish and oodles of spiced apricot, baked peach, baklava, lily, dried herbs, satsuma and marmalade notes. It makes your mouth water, eager for another sip.
